A rich young ruler approached Jesus and asked what it took to inherit eternal life. The young ruler believed that he could be saved by keeping the law. Rather than arguing with the ruler Jesus told him to sell everything and follow Him. Rather than doing this, the ruler departed in sadness. He had missed the whole point of "giving up to gain."
